Review Seminar: The effects of geothermy to the vegetation recovery and soil properties on Mt. Usu

The geothermal activity and/or the volcanic ejecta on Mt. Usu from the 1977-1988 eruptions destroyed vegetation. After the eruptions, the vegetation and soils are gradually recovering. There are various patterns of vegetation recovery. Now, moss and herbs dotted around the fumy craters and in the inner wall of western somma, while Populus maximowiczii, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, and Salix integra, formed tall stand in the areas detached from the crater and fumaroles.

In the field research, I thought that geothermy and volcanic gas played an important role to recover the vegetation and to form soils. The objectives of the present study are to clarify, how the geothermy and volcanic gas influence on the vegetation recovery and soil properties.

I researched the difference of the soil temperature, soil properties and vegetation recovery in the deposit areas of volcanic ejecta, on the upper part of Mt. Usu, in 2008. In addition, I am going to examine concentration of volcanic gas and the water-soluble ions in soils this year.
