Often creating zonal distribution of plant communities along distance from shoreline

There are many endemic and/or endangered species, due to its specific environments, as well as wetland (湿原), and destruction of natural coasts by human activities

A typical forest is Quercus dentata forest in Hokkaido.

A few of these species establish on the volcanoes Mount Usu and Mount Koma, both of which are located nearby the Pacific Ocean.
