Jinchouge (ジンチョウゲ, 沈丁花), winter daphne
Etymology of Japanese name: 沈香(香) + 丁字(花) (odora = odor)
Life form: evergreen shrub < 1.5 m high
Distribution: Himalaya - central China (used for gardening in Japan)

Only male strains are thought to be imported before mid-Muromachi Era (室町時代) → the reproduction is mostly performed by vegetative reproduction (cuttage) for gardening

Habitat: sunny sites, being not dry
Poisonous plant (毒草): producing daphnin
Varieties (for gardening):
f. alba (Hemsley) Hara (シロバナジンチョウゲ)
f. marginata Makino (フクリンジンチョウゲ)
f. rosacea (Makino) Hara (ウスイロジンチョウゲ)
