Life form: rhizomatous, perennial forb with 50-90 cm in height
Distribution: East Asia (China - Taiwan - Korea - Japan, south to Kanto District)
Habitat: forest floors (mainly in evergreen broad-leaved forests)
Friut: white → blue → black
Chromosome number: 2n = 38
Edible: young shoot
var. minor Walker (コヤブミョウガ), less than 40 cm tall and fewer flowers in Okinawa and Kagoshima
