Acer miyabei is a species of maple distributed in Hokkaido and northern Honshu (mainland) of Japan. Now it is in danger of extinction. In Japanese, this species is known as “Kurobi-itaya” after the black ash color of the bark.
In connection with the discovery of this tree in Hidaka area in 1884 by Dr. Kingo Miyabe (宮部金吾), it is also called “Miyabe-itaya”. The species epithet “miyabei” is dedicated to Dr. Miyabe.
