Young shoot: non-flavor ↔ P. koreana Rehd. (チリメンドロ) = flavor Synonyms: Populus suaveolens Fisch., recently used Populus suaveolens Fisch. ssp. maximowiczii (A.Henry) Tatew. var. barbinervis Nakai (ケドロノキ)

[1-3] on the caldera rim of Mount Usu. [1/2] many poplar saplings damaged by insect herbivores. Leaves were completely withered owing to the herbivory. However, this tree was alive in the next year. Great! The two photos were taken on July 27 1995 (Haruki & Tsuyuzaki 2001). [3] Regeneration of Populus maximowiczii was exclusively from resprouts from branches buried beneath the volcanic deposits on the caldera rim (Tsuyuzaki & Haruki 1996). [1-3] on November 12 1990.
