Diphylleia Mich. (サンカヨウ) One species is native to Japan Sankayou (サンカヨウ, 山荷葉), umbrella leaf Etymology of Japanese name: mountain (山) + lotus (荷葉) Life form: perennial forb, with 30-50 cm tall Distribution: Japan (Honshu - Hokkaido) - Sakhalin Habitat: forests, including the edges Stem: curly hair, scale-like leaf at the base Leaf: 37 cm wide and 30 cm long Flower: white, 6 petals, 6 sepals (when young) and 6 stamens, 1 cm long, one superior ovary and 2 ovlues

Inflorescence: 3-10 flowers forming corymb on the top (June-July) Seed dispersal: animal → fruit = edible (sweet) Belowground: widespread rhizomes and many, tough roots Synonyms: Diphylleia cymosa Michx. ssp. grayi (Fr.
