Lifeform: perennial forb
Distribution: endemic to Japan
Habitat: mesic grassalnds near sea coasts
Furit: capsule → containing 8-12 seeds
Leaf: hairless, developing petioles with 3-20 cm long
Chromosome number: 2n = 12

Plantago major L. var. japonica (Franch. et Sav.) Miyabe, including - f. yezomaritima (Koidz.) Ohwi and - f. polystachya (Makino) T. Yamaz.
