Athyrium Roth (メシダ)
Inuwarabi (イヌワラビ, 犬蕨), Japanese silver painted fern
Species epithet: sometimes spelled as nipponicum
Lifeform: deciduous fern, developing whorl of fronds from the basal rootstock
Distribution: east Asia (northern China - Taiwan - Korea - Japan (south to southeastern Hokkaido)

nowadays, the plant is widespread in the central lawn of Hokkaido University (14-06-04)

Habitat: common in roadsides, forest edges, etc. in montane and lowland zones
Morphology: diverse
Pinna: developing stalk ↔ A. vidalii (ヤマイヌワラビ) = none or less stalk
Rhizome: long > A. vidalii
Utilization: gardening, and foliage plant

Cultivars, such as Pictum, Red Beauty, Pictum Cristatum and Metallicum
