Biroudo-aoi (ビロードアオイ, 天鵞絨葵)
Lifeform: tall perennial forb ≈ 1-2 m tall
Origin: western and central Asia - eastern Europe

imported to Japan in Meiji Era (M19)

Habitat: salt marshes, damp meadows, river banks. etc. in the original regions
Anther: red violet
Use: gardening, ornamental herb, medicine (root as althea root extract)
Discarded varieties:
ssp. micrantha Dostal
ssp. pseudoarmeniaca (Polg.) Karpati ex Soo
