Berberis L. (メギ)
Hosobahi-iraginanten (ホソバヒイラギナンテン, 細葉柊南天), Chinese mahonia, fortune's mahonia or holly grape
Life form: evergreen shrub, with 0.5-4 m tall
Distribution: endemic to China and Taiwan

imported to Japan after Meiji Era (明治時代)

Habitat: forests, scrub thickets, roadsides, along streams, margins of cultivated fields
Leaf: odd-pinnately compound and alternately arranged
Seed dispersal: rounded purple-blue berry → animal
Chromosome number: 2n = 28
Utilization: park tree, gardening, etc.
Synonyms:

Mahonia fortunei (Lindl.) Fedde ex C. K. Schneid.
