Ipomoea L. (サツマイモ)
Satsumaimo (サツマイモ, 薩摩芋), sweet potato or sweetpotato
Life form: perennial vine, with tuberous roots
Distribution: native to tropical regions of South America (Ecuador)

5000 ya: cultivated between Yucatán Peninsula and the mouth of the Orinoco River
widespread nowadays due to cultivation

Habitat: the edges of dry forests and woodlands, sometimes on disturbed areas

intolerant to frost

Leaf: variable, in shape, ranging from entire and rounded to deeply lobed
Use: root vegetable (many cultivars) and greens
Synonyms:

Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. var. edulis (Thunb.) Kuntze, discarded
