Acanthopanax Miq. (ウコギ)
Yamaukogi (ヤマウコギ, 山五加木)
Lifeform: deciduous shrub ≈ 2-4 m in height
Distribution: south to Honshu in Japan
Habitat: grasslands and sunny forests
Leaf: five leaflets with shallow or unclear teeth
Synonyms:
Eleutherococcus spinosus (L. f.) S. Y. Hu, often used

when Eleutherococcus is established:
- var. japonicus (Franch. et Sav.) H. Ohba (オカウコギ) = Acanthopanax nipponicus Makino, south to Fukushima Prefecture
- var. nikaianus (Koidz. ex Nakai) H. Ohba (ウラゲウコギ) = Acanthopanax nikaianus Koidz. ex Nakai, south to Kinki District
