Distribution: native to China, introduced to Japan in Heian Era

Chaenomeles lagenaria Koidz.

Cultivars: Toyonishiki, Yume, Hinomihata and Takanenishiki (large, single-flowered), Sekaiichi and Daihoshu (extremely large, double-flowered), Azumashibori (precocity), Koko (moderate-sized, single-flowered)
