Lifeform: rhizomatous, deciduous forb
Distribution: China - Korea - Japan
Habitat: sunny to semi-shaded sites
Spur: blue → V. kusanoana = white
Chromosome number: 2n = 20
Varieties (not fixed, because of diverse morphology)
var. exilis (Miq.) Nakai (コタチツボスミレ), south to Kinki District

var. yakusimensis Masam. (ヤクシマタチツボスミレ), only in Yakushima → incorporated into var. exilis

var. hichitoana (Nakai) F. Maekawa (シチトウスミレ), Izu Shichito Islands (伊豆七島)
var. ripensis N. Yamada et Okamoto (ケイリュウタチツボスミレ)
