Lifeform: parasitic, perennial forb with 0.8 m tall
Distribution: western North America (Alaska - California - New Mexico and Ontario)
Habitat: widespread, e.g., open woods, thickets, meadows, fens, grassy slopes, tidal marshes, roadsides, and gravel bars
Chromosome number: 2n = 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120
Synonyms:

Castilleja elata Piper

ssp. dixonii (Fernald) A. Nelson et J. F. Macbr., the west coast between Alaska and Oregon
ssp. elata (Piper) Munz, Siskiyou Indian paintbrush, rare in Klamath Mountains in Northern California and Southern Oregon
