Spergula L. (オオツメクサ)
S. arvensis L. (オオツメクサ, 大爪草, s.l.), corn spurry, stickwort, starwort or spurrey
Lifeform: weedy, annual/prennial forb with 20-50 cm in height
Distribution: widespread in temperate regions

introduced to Japan in Meiji Era

Habitat: roadsides, farmland, sand dunes and coniferous woodland
Chromosome number: 2n = 18 and 36
var. arvensis (ノハラツメクサ, 野原爪草)

Seed: white, virgate trichomes on seed

var. maxima (Weihe) Mert. et W. D. J. Koch (オオツメクサモドキ, 大爪草擬)

Seed: larger than var. sativa, 2-3 mm φ

var. sativa (Boenn.) Mert. et W.D.J.Koch (オオツメクサ, 大爪草, s.s.)

Seed: no hair, 1 mm φ
