Lifeform: evergreen perennial horsetail < 40 (80) cm in height
Morophology: highly variable (often misidentified)

ssp. variegatum
ssp. alaskanum (A. A. Eaton) Hultén

Distribution: widespread in the Northern Hemisphere (tundra), including Hokkaido

Rare → RDB Japan (2007) = VU

Habitat: wetlands (湿原), including river banks and lake shores, and wet subalpine zone → tussock (谷地坊主)
