Lifeform: evergreen perennial fern, with more than 1 m in height

deciduous in the northern limit

Distribution: widespread in tropical and substropical regions, including Japan (south to Chiba Prefecture, Kanto District)
Habitat: mesic forests and forest edges

unpalatable for deer

Leaf form: pentagon
var. samoensis C. Chr., endemic to Samoa Islands
