Murasaki-umagoyashi (ムラサキウマゴヤシ, 紫馬肥)/セイヨウウマゴヤシ, alfalfa or lucerne
Lifeform: deciduous perennial forb (3-12 years)
Distribution: native to Mediterranean region (exotic to Japan)

imported to Japan, mostly Hokkaido, in late Edo → spreading in early Meiji Era particulary to Hokkaido as pasture
Hokkaido Blue List: A3

Habitat: flatland, and seacoast (optimal soil pH = 6.5-7.0)
Use: pasture, food (bean sprouts) and supplements (vitamins and minerals)
Well-known as nitrogen-fixing plant
