Lifeform: deciduous shrub < 5 m high
Distribution: China - Japan
Habitat: volcanos (→ flora on Mounts Koma and Usu), forests, shrublands, and wetlands (湿原)

f. velutina (Nakai) Kitamura, or var. velutina Nakai (ビロードノリウツギ, 天鵞絨糊空木), leaves developing dense hair
